The Mustang was Ford’s most iconic post-war car and hit the market as a true sensation. It’s rugged yet sleek looks, high level of comfort, its immaculate performance and overall affordability made that the Mustang an American sweetheart that everybody wanted to own. The most desirable of the Mustang range was the V8 K-Code engine.
The K-Code Mustang was all performance. In fact, K-Code Mustangs were not available with air conditioning or power steering. And you couldn’t buy one with an automatic transmission until the 1966 model year. Prior to that, the K-Code Mustangs had only four speeds. With an estimated 271-hp engine on board, it was easy to tell this car from other 289 powered Mustangs of the day.
The K-Code refers to the Mustangs 289-cubic inch V8 engine. The name was given to the engine due to the K in the fifth position on the car’s chassis number. The 289 K-Code was different due to its upgraded pistons, lifter heads, connecting rods, carburettor and cylinder heads. To keep that look and feel of a sports car, the K-Code Mustang was offered with a standard four-speed manual.
The entire driveline of these cars was designed for performance including a high-performance clutch, drive shaft, rear differential, and suspension. It’s no wonder Shelby put the engine in his racing performance GT350 Mustangs. In fact, the first Shelby Mustang, the Shelby GT350Rfeatured a modified K-Code engine.
Unfortunately, only a limited number of these engines were produced between 1963 to 1967, and there were even fewer original K-code Mustangs (only about 13,214 were made).
Our 1965 factory original Ford Mustang K-Code has an Ivy green exterior with an iconic pearl green pony trim interior accompanied by off-white detailing and wooden accents on the dashboard. The body and interior were beautifully restored around 6 years ago and the entire car is in stunning condition.
